In a recent turn of events, Leslie Alexander, victim of a brutal slashing incident that took place at the MGM Grand in 2021, has filed a civil lawsuit against parent company MGM Resorts International. Grievously, a different individual had been subjected to a similar knife attack by the purported criminal in the very same hotel, just 24 hours prior to Alexander’s horrifying ordeal.
Hailing from Canal Winchester, Ohio, Leslie Alexander faults MGM Resorts for their negligence, accusing them of failing in their responsibility to safeguard her against the alleged assailant, 47-year-old Nathaniel Mahoney.
The first incident took place on the 5th of September, with the second cruel attack following merely hours later on the 6th. Alexander had been strolling through the MGM Grand when she became the victim of this random assault. Mahoney, who had seemingly taken up a position at a slot machine bank near the women’s restroom, had reportedly chosen Alexander arbitrarily.
Court filings quote her Las Vegas-based attorney, F. Travis Buchanan, who stated that from Alexander’s perspective, the terrifying attack had felt like it lasted several minutes, given the unexpected and unprovoked nature of the assault, as well as the high degree of trauma it had induced.
The lawsuit further criticizes the resort’s security staff. It claims that neither the hotel’s security team nor any of its employees or agents showed up at the scene until well after the brutal attack had already occurred.
While conversing with an officer from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Alexander discovered that Mahoney had been implicated in a similar slashing event that transpired the previous night, as per the court disclosures.
In the early hours of September 5, it is alleged that Mahoney assaulted another man, chosen at random, in the same lobby and gaming floor area of the hotel.
Authors of the law uncovered that Mahoney had been arrested on the Las Vegas Strip following the second attack. A four-and-a-half-inch knife was recovered from his person.
In response to these heinous acts, Mahoney was hit with major charges including battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm, possession of a deadly weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.
However, earlier this year, under a plea agreement, Mahoney pleaded guilty to a single count of assault with a deadly weapon.
To this end, prosecution recommended a prison term ranging from 19 to 48 months. Las Vegas Judge Michelle Leavitt followed through in March, delivering this sentence. Mahoney was awarded a 600-day credit for time already served on remand and for time spent during competency proceedings. Subsequently, the court ruled him competent for sentencing.
Through the civil lawsuit, Alexander is seeking damages of at least $15,000 from MGM Resorts. Despite attempts to seek a response from MGM Resorts regarding the ongoing civil litigation, no immediate comment has been made available.
